What The Heck Do They Eat In Oakland Anyway?

My friend Mary writes: “Now that you have successfully eaten our beloved Jints to victory with gumbo what do you plan to prepare to defeat the Raiders?”

That’s a damn good question Mary and I wish I had a good answer. San Francisco would be easy. Chippino would work or something with arugula in it, and it would have to be in season of course with a nice Nappa Valley Chardonay. Oakland is a different story entirely.

Not only is Oakland a more working class, down and dirty kind of place everyone always talks about their popular sister city across the bay and nobody spends a great deal of time writing about the Oakland culinary scene.

Based on who you see representing “Raider Nation” in the stands they may be tailgating with the liver of some unsuspecting San Diego Chargers fan with fava beans and a nice chianti.

So what the heck do they eat in Oakland anyway. I am looking for suggestions. The best suggestion will be cooked on Sunday and served to my guests so that we can eat the Raiders in effigy. Be creative, I can cook anything.

    According to Wikipedia: Oakland is the home of Rocky Road ice cream, and the Mai Tai cocktail. Sounds like a party to me!

    A Rocky Road Mai Tai? Maybe a frozen chocolate and fruit drink with a sugar rimmed glass and a marshmallow with a slit cut into it sitting at a jaunty angle on the rim of the glass? HAHAHHAHAHAH!!! Jay and Richard Cockrell used to make these things called Rocky Road Blocks….a pan of brownies with a layer of mini marshmallows, popped in the oven briefly so the marshmallows melt a little, sprinkled with sliced toasted almonds and a drizzle of chocolate syrup. They were damn good.

    Well all I have to say is if it was a Rocky Road Mai Tai or some other delicious concoction you did a heck of a job….we finally had as my Dad used to call a “laugher”. So what are you going to whip up to help us beat the far tougher Saints……can’t repeat the gumbo….how about shrimp creole????????
